Seriously Geeky Cosplay

Cosplay! That thing I would do if I had more money, talent, and free time! While there aren’t any conventions right now, that doesn’t mean that people have stopped being creative. I’m constantly blown away by the thought and effort people will put into their outfits. This week we take a look at some of my favorites, as well as what cosplays means to me and who I would dress up as, given the chance.

Seriously Geeky Sundays are brought to you by Heather over at Just Geeking By, check it out and join the fun. Every week has interesting prompts, and the questions are quite unique.

Have you cosplayed before? If yes, which character was your favorite? If no, which character would you like to cosplay as?

I’ve never cosplayed, low self esteem and an inability to really narrow down who I’d like to be has left me limited. That being said, I’d love to get the chance to dress up as my Hunter from World of Warcraft, especially if I could get the raid armor figured out. I would look so cool!

What does cosplay mean to you?

It means getting the chance to pretend you’re someone different, someone you look up to or appreciate in some way.

Do you have a favorite cosplayer?

I’m not active in this scene at all, but looking up lists tells me that Jessica Nigri has got her shit figured out. I love that she’s not afraid to do cosplays of non-conventional, “unattractive” characters. Unfortunately, it does seem impossible to get away from excessive T&A in cosplay, and every list I look at has… a certain demographic that it leans towards. So let’s diversify! I really like CutiePieSensei, a Black cosplayer who’s Marvel work is off the charts (and I adore her Hinata from Naruto). And PixelGhost’s Hermione is my new headcanon. Lantheacosplay is owning the plus-sized scene with lush and detailed costumes. And Baozi & hana are a gay Chinese couple that do duo cosplays and they are so cute and sweet you might get a sugar high just looking at their posts.

What is the most unique cosplay you have ever seen?

The last fanime I went to had two people cosplaying Peter Pan. One was OG Peter and the other was his shadow- “Peter” would walk around casually while his “shadow” would mock and tease him from behind before striking a pose when “Peter” turned to look. It was a great cosplay and you can tell they put a lot of practice into their mannerisms, too!

Have you ever done a casual cosplay (aka everyday cosplay) or  Disney bounding?

No, but I’ve always wanted to! I’d love to do a casual cosplay of Aurora’s woodland dress from Sleeping Beauty, or Belle’s winter gown in Beauty and the Beast.

Pick a group of characters from a fandom and tell us who they would cosplay as!

Let’s do Alex, Henry, Nora, and June, from Red, White, and Royal Blue, and let’s say their teaming up for an Avengers Cosplay.

Alex would be Iron Man, all American and flashy with enough ego for a couple people and a desire to have all the attention. Alex is Tony but with less of that science prodigy energy.

Henry would be Doctor Strange and spend too much time arguing with Alex about magic and science in the MC universe.

Nora would be Nebula and use it as an excuse to shave her head.

And June would be Black Widow and actually learn some martial arts so that she looked more authentic.

  1. This is the most accurate thing ever: That thing I would do if I had more money, talent, and free time

I keep meaning to cosplay, but at most I end up doing 1 costume/year, which is 50% reusing my Rogue from World of Warcraft cosplay.

  2. Out of all the games I’ve played I think I’d like to a Warcraft character the most. But I’m not the kind of person who would want to go out in a less-than-perfect attempt. If it’s not going to win first place, I don’t want to do it. Probably not the best stance to have it, but alas, there it is. If quarantine had only lasted longer for me, I probably would have gotten there.
